Networking Specialist Job Description

Networking specialists (also known as a computer support specialists) support the IT department by testing, evaluating, and maintaining existing networks and troubleshooting LANs (local area network) and WANs (wide area network). Their tasks include operating and maintaining network connection components, keeping accurate records of service support, monitoring network access and security settings, and resolving network problems and service incidents. They utilize network management software and tools as well as defined procedures and instructions to report on network performance and resolve network issues.

The networking specialist’s job description includes assessing and investigating existing network systems performance and the reliability of network equipment and network infrastructure in the organization. Computer network support specialists fix various computer and software problems as well as evaluate network data on infrastructure performance and reliability. Other computer networking tasks may include installing networking cables and monitoring network access permissions.

The computer networking specialist performs hardware and software installations, maintains network hardware, builds and installs computer peripherals, and supports the installation and maintenance of computer systems and network equipment in the organization. They also install and maintain network infrastructure and devices such as routers and switches, as well computer equipment. Their extensive knowledge in networking, including the ability to analyze, maintain, and fix networks and Internet systems, is invaluable to business operations.

An IT networking specialist must have the ability to support the ongoing operation of computer systems and networks. This includes the maintenance and servicing of network systems, network infrastructure, and network operation. Their task is to ensure that networks and systems are maintained, troubleshoot problems, monitor network access, and ensure information is communicated smoothly. They are also responsible for the maintenance and monitoring of the network connectivity component, including reporting on performance.

Many network technicians are also responsible for maintaining the company’s telephone systems. In the course of maintaining these systems, the network technician is expected to perform a variety of computer networking tasks, such as operating the system, performing maintenance tasks, and monitoring the network equipment. Other tasks include support and training on best practices and procedures for end users, research and procurement of new equipment, maintenance of network equipment, and monitoring of computer systems.

The main responsibility of the network operations specialist lies in maintaining a network of computers, servers, and other networking devices and software. The task of computer networking requires access to all types of networks, including wireless, fiber, and Cat5 networks, and primarily requires maintaining the security of network equipment, network infrastructure, and network management systems. 

Computer network support specialists have extensive knowledge in supporting computer networks and providing technical assistance directly to computer users. They provide support, training, and best practice for end users, as well as support and assistance to system experts. The new development of cloud computing has opened a new career path for networking specialists to use and apply their networking skills in the Internet environment. They deal with problems with Internet and computer hardware such as security and network infrastructure management.     

The network specialist job description requires a high level of technical knowledge and experience in network infrastructure management, computer networking, and network management. Communication skills are required for this position, as the specialist will work with the company's staff to provide computer support. Education requirements for some entry level positions may only be an Associate degree, but a Bachelor’s degree is often preferred.
