An IT system manager is an information technology (IT) specialist who supervises the IT department within an organization. IT system managers, as they are commonly called, oversee all computer-related activities and applications within the organization, such as information system management, software development, and the maintenance and servicing of the computer system. Their tasks may include analyzing computer needs, ensuring network security, identifying personnel needs and negotiating with new technology providers, as well as cost estimation. 

The head of IT systems is an important part of the organization and supervises and manages all IT computer systems in the company as well as the IT infrastructure. Information systems managers set up Internet and intranet sites and develop computer networks to secure the organization's data. It is the duty of computer and information systems managers to improve hardware, software, and system design and to implement computers and networks.  

The computer and information systems manager, also known as the IT manager, does the work of making information accessible. They also determine the company's computer needs, set the project budget, perform project management tasks, and work with management to provide the necessary resources.  Information systems managers help create the business plan, monitor system security, and manage Internet operations. IT managers look for new product developments and information technologies to keep the company's business relevant and up to date. By consulting with companies about what they want to achieve and what their ultimate goal is for the technology used, the head of the information systems coordinates with the chief information officer (CIO) and other senior executives to help achieve the company's goals.  

The tasks of information systems managers generally include computer-related activities, such as setting goals to ensure that the company's computer and network systems are effective, reliable, and secure. To achieve these goals, the information systems manager can create, monitor, and execute information technology plans, as well as design, build, test, maintain, or update technologies. They are responsible for analyzing the organization's computer needs and suggesting upgrades that executives can consider. They also identify the software and hardware needs and work to close gaps, in addition to implementing patches and upgrades if necessary. 

Often, computer and information systems managers who start in middle management positions can eventually move up to the top positions in the IT department, such as Chief Information Officer or Chief Technology Officer. Their job duties include leading their organization's IT departments by overseeing all computer-related activities and working with key executives within the organization to evaluate and continuously improve current IT practices. The computer and information systems manager job description often involves providing oversight and guidance for technology upgrades and consulting with executives on how to use technology to improve business operations. Types of computer and information systems managers include system administrators, network and computer system administrators, and network system managers. Labor statistics show that the development of computer technology and the Internet has made computer information systems experts among the most sought-after and highest paid.

Most information systems management positions require a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, management information systems, or a related field. A master's in business administration with a concentration in information systems or a graduate degree in a technical subject may be preferred by some employers.
